Original language description
The present work deals with hydrometallurgical treatment of electrode materials originated from spent Zn/MnO2 batteries after their dismantling. The processed electrode materials so called black powder containing about 20% Zn and 30% Mn was leached in diluted H2SO4 at laboratory temperature to achieve maximum zinc extraction with the simultaneous minimum extraction of manganese. Zinc was recovered from the refined leach liquors as basic zinc carbonate precipitate, a suitable intermediate for ZnO production or preparing zinc sulphate electrolyte for zinc electrowinning. Manganese, the main valuable impurity in the electrode material was precipitated as MnO2 using sodium hypochlorite after the hydrolytic removal of iron and cementation precipitation to remove Cu, Cd and Ni.
