CRIZZLING GLASS - CORROSION PRODUCTS AND CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF BOHEMIAN GLASS
Original language description
The damage of objects due to the corrosion of glass can assume a number of forms with crizzling being one of them. So far, five stages of crizzling have been described. The term crizzling refers to a network of cracks occuring on the object surface, accompanied by the flaking of corroded glass - this may lead to the loss of material and in the worst-case to the total disintegration of an object. This phenomenon is described especially in the connection with the products manufactured in the central Europe from the late 17th to 18th centuries, but it also occurs in more recent objects. To assess the crizzling of glass, two groups of samples were studied (mainly from Bohemian).
