Levels of phytoestrogens in soya foodstuffs and special food supplements.
Original language description
Phytoestrogens represent biological active compounds showing estrogenic activity similarly to sex hormones - estrogens. These chemicals may have negative biological effects, which were observed especially in farm animals (sterility, increase of females'genitals, lost of males' copulation activity, etc.) after high dietary intake. On the other hand, the presence of these compounds in human diet is nowadays the object of many research studies concerned with hormone-related diseases such as breast and prostate cancer, osteoporosis, etc. Soya (Glycine max) presents the main source of phytoestrogens. Plant phytoestrogens are represented by several chemical classes of compounds: isoflavones daidzein and genistein mainly conteined in soya (total content up to 1-2 g/kg) are probably the most important. They occur in free form and bound as glycosides. Coumestrol another important phytoestrogen it can be in sprouting soya and alfalfa. Because of claimed health benefits, then the food supplement
