Recent trends in the area of mycotoxin analysis
Original language description
Mycotoxins are toxic secondary metabolites produced by various micromycetes in a wide range of foods and feeds. Several mycotoxins are potential carcinogens and have been classified by the International Agency for Research in Cancer (IARC, 1993) as humancarcinogens or potential human carcinogens. The Food Agricultural Organisation (FAO, 1999) estimated that up to 25 % of world's food crops are significantly contaminated with mycotoxins. Their incidence can fluctuate from year to year depending on manyfactors such climatic conditions, agricultural practices, storing. Mycotoxins can never be completely removed from raw materials therefore monitoring of their levels is necessary every year. Recent trends in mycotoxin analysis head towards different directions: i) validate methods for "Official Food Control" - multiresidual methods ii) rapid methods for early screening
