Rapid sample preparation procedure for the simultaneous determination of PCBs, PBDEs and PAHs in fish
Original language description
Since polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) belong, according to European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) among the food contaminants that should be monitored; quick, rugged, sensitive, inexpensive and high throughput analytical approaches are currently required. To protect consumers? health against undesirable effects originating from this class of food contaminants, European Commission set maximum levels of dioxin-like PCBs, benzo[a]pyrene and other contaminants in feed and food in Commission Regulation No. 1881/2006. The maximum limits for PBDEs in food are not fully established; however from August 2004 the European Union (EU) has prohibited goods containing more than 0.1%of PentaBDE and OctaBDE. Furthermore, in July 2008, electrical and electronical goods with DecaBDE were banned from being sold on the EU market. Despite the fact that EU set limit only for benzo[a]pyrene, 30% of samples where this PAH was
