Phytochemical composition of various herbal extracts: UHPLC-HRMS/MS data
Original language description
Usage of herbal extracts in traditional medicine as well as in cosmetics is getting nowadays more and more popular. Herbal extracts have positive effects on human health and the body thanks to the content of various bioactive compounds. The bioactive compounds are mostly polyphenols such as flavonoids, phenolic acids or tannins. Amongst their confirmed bioactivities are for example antioxidant activity, anti-inflammatory or hepatoprotective effect. Various parts of these herbs such as flowers, stems, leaves or roots are used for the preparation of herbal extracts. In this project, more than 20 samples of various herbal parts of different herbs typically occurring in Czech Republic nature and known for usage in traditional medicine were studied. For every herbal sample, two solvents were used for extract preparation: (i) 40% ethanol and (ii) 96% ethanol. In these extracts, target screening of polyphenol compounds with the instrumental technique of ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-HRMS/MS) was carried out. For the purpose of the screening and compounds identification, an in-house database of more than 500 polyphenolic compounds was created. The profiles of bioactive compounds among the different extracts of the herbal parts were compared and this information will be employed for follow-up investigations focused on selection of most promising herbal extracts for practical applications.
