Original language description
Xylitol production using Debaryomyces hansenii yeast cultivation on xylosee is a very complex and complicated process. In this paper, the so-called physiological model is proposed, based on knowledge from literature and from our practical experiments. Itdistinguishes two main metabolic phases important for xylitol production, among others. In the batch phase, the fermentation vessel is operated to support exponential unlimited growth of cells and in the following fed-batch phase, the conditions are maintained to encouradge the xylitol production. Questions about on-line classification of these states from easily and cheaply measured variables are studied. Replacement of expensive off-line HPLC analyses of xylose by reliably and on-line determined respiration quotient is discussed.
