Original language description
Mechanically agitated aerated vessels with multiple impellers on a common shaft are widely used in chemical and biochemical processes based on a gas-liquid contact. For the design of the equipment it is necessary to provide required transport characteristics (i.e. gas hold-up, mixing intensity and volumetric mass transfer coefficient) at as low energy consumption as possible. Transport characteristics depend on physical properties of the dispersion and on the equipment geometry. For instance, the choiceof the impeller type is very important. Gas hold-up, mixing intensity, volumetric mass transfer coefficient and power consumption are measured in a vessel of inner diameter 0.29m equipped with three Lightnin A315 impellers on a common shaft. Water and 0.5M solution of Na2SO4, which represent the limiting cases of coalescent and non-coalescent batch, respectively, are used as liquid phases.
