Formation and separation of segmented flow in microfluidic chips
Original language description
In this study, we deal with a microcapillary/microchannel two-phase enzyme reaction system that uses a slug/segmented flow to increase the reaction surface. The microdevices are fabricated from polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS) or polymethyl methacrylate PMMAby a combination of microfabrication techniques ? UV photolithography, micromachining, hot assembling, casting and UV/O3 treatment. The water-oil emulsion was generated in a plexiglass microchip with an X-cross microchannel arrangement. Both the oil andwater were pumped into the microchip by a precise syringe pumps. The oil phase was introduced into the central microchannel whereas water into the two side channels. Then, the generated slug flow left the microchip into a microcapillary of an appropriate length. The capillary connected the microchip for generation of the slug flow and another microchip for separation of the liquid phases. The separator was fabricated by means of the casting technique ? poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) elas
