Reconstruction of lamellae morphology of semi-crystalline polymers and modeling of diffusion transport
Original language description
Semi-crystalline polymers constitute the largest group of commercially useful polymers. Semi-crystalline structure of polymer consists of amorphous and crystalline phase. Examples of semi-crystalline polymers are HDPE, LDPE, LLDPE and PP (high-density polyethylene, low-density PE, linear low-density PE, polypropylene). Diffusion of penetrates (e.g., monomers) in these polymers is important in manufacturing and down-stream processing. Crystalline phase is organized in lamellae of characteristic thicknessof 10 nm. Lateral growth of lamellae from nucleation center, their branching and twisting creates spherulites of characteristic size in the range of 0.1 to 100 ?m. We are developing tools for mapping from the space of morphology of semi-crystalline polymers into the space of their transport and mechanical properties. The goal of the experimental part of this work is the systematic investigation of the semi-crystalline lamellae morphology of polyolefin samples by AFM. Samples of PE were
