WORKSHOP AXIS SYLLABUS was led by Francesca Pedulla, Axis Syllabus lecturer, dancer, choreographer, and independent curator. A video recording of the whole workshop was made, which was documented photographically by Alex Chuda. Helena Arenbergerová and Andrea Opavská conducted a structured interview with the teacher of the workshop on 15 April 2023, focusing on the didactic-methodological and terminological specifics of this system, its inspirational sources, its formalization (certification), the social milieu of its emergence, the impact of the pandemic on its transformation, etc. Through the lens of the Axis Syllabus we observed and played with the refinement and intelligence of our body while moving and interacting with the circumstances in and around us. Here are some questions at stake: How can I differentiate the perception of the multiple actions - reactions within my structure while I am moving? Can I sense their timing? How do I define the boundaries between what it is me and what is not? How can I use and specify the role of my structures to absorb impact, push, pull, get closer, getting far? During the seminar, we used some of the tools offered by the Axis Syllabus such as joint parameters, spinal mechanics, and safety protocols for shock absorption and propulsion and we analyzed how to turn gravitational forces to our favor. Working with both theoretical and practical stimuli, we found time to discuss the process, do and observe individual and group improvisations, and of course, we will dance together! The AXIS SYLLABUS is a human movement lexicon that interrelates information from anatomy, biomechanics, and physics to universal movement principles. Originally consolidated by Frey Faust, the AS has become a movement and research platform for the ASIRN (Axis Syllabus International Research Network). Hailing from diverse areas of expertise, ASIRN members are exploring the kinetic potential of the human body and developing functional movement patterns beyond aesthetic criteria. They are physically applying, exploring, and counterchecking the data gathered in the AS and also introducing new empirical/scientific data to the group, which keeps the AS evolving constantly. In AS classes certified teachers are fostering collaborative and explorative learning situations and propose models for a joyful way of moving by our body structure and its physical context. As a reference for locomotion, The Axis Syllabus reflects on how we might move and dance in a health-promoting and respectful manner - towards ourselves and others with whom we are sharing movement, time, and space.
