Letter to the Editor. Acetic acid is elevated in the exhaled breath of cystic fibrosis patients
Original language description
Breath analysis is becoming an attractive non-invasive aid tonclinical diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring and can providenmore insight into pathology of cystic fibrosis (CF) and relatednrespiratory infections. Selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry,nSIFT-MS [1] allows the analysis of single breathnexhalations on line and also by the off-line analysis of breathnsamples collected into bags. SIFT-MS breath analysis has beenndirected previously towards identification of volatile biomarkersnof bacterial infection, including Pseudomonasnaeruginosa that commonly infect the lungs of CF patients.nThus, hydrogen cyanide, HCN, has been identified as a breathnmetabolite compound specific (99%) to P. aeruginosa [2].
