Plasmodium vivax hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase: A target for anti-malarial chemotherapy
Original language description
For protozoan parasites, 6-oxopurine phosphoribosyltransferases (PRTases) provide the only metabolic pathway to synthesize the purine nucleoside monophosphates essential for DNA/RNA production. This enzyme from Plasmodium vivax was cloned, expressed andpurified and its properties compared with those of the corresponding enzymes from human and P. falciparum. Several acyclic nucleoside phosphonates were evaluated as inhibitors of PvHGPRT giving Ki values as low as 0.5 .mu.M.
