    During processing of coal especially suitable for coking a significant amount of sludge is generated. Most of the technological operations are performed in the aqueous environment. Unprocessed sludge and also emergency overflows were dumped at tailings ponds in the past when technology had not yet been at today's level. This was practiced in the coal mining districts of the Lower and Upper Silesian Basin in Poland and the Czech Republic.
