Recently, the competency models are of high concern in the Human Resource Management (hereinafter "HRM"). Management by competencies allows for the selection of such employees, who become an important production factor and contribute to the increase of company's competitiveness. The process of evaluation and the determination of needs for lifelong education is another field where the competency models can be applied. The competency models are of high importance for educational institutions. Secondary schools and universities should reflect the labor market requirements by adapting their study programs. Graduates with particular specialization should be well equipped by the end of the education in order to fulfill specific employer requirements. Study deals with the importance of competencies and competency models in the process of Human Resource Management. It also emphasizes the importance of the competence development in the framework of education process and strives to highlight divergences between expected and real level of the technical university graduates competencies. The results of the various researches conducted, allow to create competency model focused especially on technical university students and graduates.
