Knowledge is supposed to be the future leading and the most critical factor in shaping economic life. European Union has presented a number of various reforms and long-term initiatives such as Bologna Declaration, the Lisbon Agenda and currently in forceEurope 2020 and Horizon 2020 to secure Europe?s future economic growth. But the Europe?s higher education system is still struggling and the performance gap between European and American universities remains too large. This study aims to evaluate the European universities performance according to Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) index compared to the American universities. To analyse this, a Country Performance Index (CPI) is computed for chosen European countries for 2012 data. The indexis calculated with respect to country population and then modified using instead of total population a number of students.
