The BDNF Val66Met polymorphism is not associated with myocardial infarction in Czech patients.

  • Original language description

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of coronary artery disease (CAD). BDNF Val66Met polymorphism has recently been associated with particular manifestation of CAD (unstable angina) in Chinese population. To further explore a possible role of this polymorphism as a genetic modifier in CAD we have investigated its association with myocardial infarction in the Czech population. BDNF Val66Met polymorphism was genotyped by realtime PCR (TaqMan) in 180 healthy unrelated control subjects and in 217 patients with myocardial infarction (MI) diagnosed according to the international (ESC) consensus. Genotype and allele frequencies of the BDNF Val66Met polymorphism did not differ between MI patients (frequency of BDNF 66Met allele: 18%, Met/Met genotype 4%) and control subjects (17%, 5%, p}0.05). Similarly, no association of BDNF Val66Met variant with MI was observed in the subanalysis according to the gender.
