On the Status of Begin and Start in Constructions with the Verb Be

  • Original language description

The chapter investigates the usage of the verbs begin and start complemented by the infinitive and -ing forms of the verb be in the BNC and the COCA (most of them being passive forms and be/being as a copula followed by an adjectival subject complement). The chapter places within the context of contemporary grammaticalization accounts Poldauf's argument that in the constructions with the infinitive the semantic weight shifts from the governing verb to the infinitive, and that the governing verb comes close to being a grammatical device (Poldauf 1955, 221).
