Chinese Anthroponyms from a Grammatologist Perspective
Original language description
At first sight, Chinese character graphics would seem to indicate that there must be more information hidden in one character than in one grapheme of an alphabetic script. This paper investigates how specific features of the writing system used affect the choice of proper names. Compared to the European tradition, there is no official name list in China, which is the reason why Chinese given names manifest a high degree of diversity. Although there are a range of factors usually considered, in the end it is the character with its meaning and other qualities that is chosen. The aim of this paper is to examine and identify which graphical, phonological and semantic patterns are used as distinctive features in male and female names. The grammatological characteristics of Chinese given names from the last two decades of the twentieth century will be described, based on a sample of Chinese Olympic team members.
