Wh-Questions: A Case Study in Czech
Original language description
In the empirical, descriptive sections of this monograph the author first presents the standard argumentation in favour of the structurally-based transformational nature of Wh-questions in English, and then applies the same or similar arguments to Czech data. The study provides a historical survey of the analyses which reflect the development of the field. Chapters are devoted to comparing extraction domains, locality conditions, and constraints defined in terms of the structures proposed. The data strongly suggests that similar characteristics can be found with Focus/Contrastive Topic re-orderings, and because the two processes are subject to the same syntactic constraints, the preferred structural analysis uses the concept of a Split CP to integrate the projections of functional projections for Focus and for the interrogative Mode.
