The Syntax and Morphology of English Verbs: Patterns that Matter

  • Original language description

The Syntax and Morphology of English Verbs argues that the best path to progress in innovative and more revealing grammatical analysis is to let go of many ideas taken from traditional, pedagogical, and even theoretical grammars, and to base each theoretical device on distributional evidence. It retains from past work only the most basic, best supported syntactic structures, which often require updating and reformulation. The book thus demonstrates the value of basing a grammatical theory on observable patterns, and with this method it constructs a thorough reanalysis of English verb forms, both bare and inflected. Chapters cover (i) the syntax of auxiliaries, focusing on fundamental differences from verbs; (ii) the similar past and perfect tenses and how to unify them; (iii) the grammar of regular inflections and contractions and the role and extent of irregularity; (iv) the differences and similarities among the differently distributed -ing forms; (v) the many glossed over contrasts between infinitives and gerunds; and (6) the grammar of passives, including verbal, adjectival, and a newly distinguished indirect passive. Each chapter builds on previous ones, and taken together, they form cumulatively a complete picture of the morphology and syntax of English verbs.
