The role of thematic competence in legal translation: A classroom perspective
Original language description
This paper addresses the role and extent of thematic competence as part of legal translation competence. Without the ambition to give a definitive answer to how much law a legal translator needs to know, it reflects upon the difference between the knowledge of law applicable to lawyers and translators, and provides examples to illustrate what legal knowledge is useful for translators, also referred to as basic legal knowledge. In addition, thepaper introduces exercises that may be used in a legal translation classroom to raise trainees’ awareness of having basic legal knowledge as well as its relevance for legal translation. The examples address the knowledge of different branches of law, understanding of legal concepts and hierarchy of legal sources. Even though the issues are based on the English-Czech language pair, they may be easily adapted to other teaching contexts.
