Reorganization of microtubular cytoskeleton in Lactuca spp. cells during early stages of infection by lettuce downy mildew (Bremia lactucae).
Original language description
Wild Lactuca spp. are possible sources of resistance to lettuce downy mildew, caused by Bremia lactucae. Cytoskeleton has been reported in few plant species to participate in resistance to fungal pathogens in the early stages of infection. Alignment of microtubules (MTs) was investigated by fluorescent microscopy in epidermal cells of Lactuca sativa and wild Lactuca spp. 24 hrs after infection by Bremia lactucae. Rapid reorientation of cortical MTs was observed in infected cells of resistant genotypes but almost none in those of susceptible plants when compared with uninfected cells.
