Level of the Repetition of Sentences and Comprehension of Mathematical Word Problems at 3rd Grade Pupils at Speech and Language Primary School in the Czech Republic
Original language description
Our paper deals with the issue of repeating sentences and the understanding of word exercises in mathematics in pupils attending the 3rd year logopaedic primary school in the Czech Republic. A prerequisite for auditory perception of repeated phrases is the use of the pupil's language processing system. Sentence repeating is not the mere mechanical reproduction of a sentence. Seven-year old children usually resolve this task correctly. Deficiencies in sentence repeating occurs in some pupils attending a logopaedic primary school, e.g. school children with specific speech impairment, pupils with specific lexicological and orthographical learning difficulties, and pupils from a bilingual family environment with native language other than Czech. Deficiencies in sentence repeating may complicate the pupils' school work. These pupils often encounter problems in understanding words, sentences, and context and in reading comprehension. Gaps in understanding may constitute a disadvantage, for example in mathematics, because the student may fail to accurately understand the verbal task or correctly solve the word exercise. Understanding the word exercise assignment in mathematics is essential for successful problem solving and for selecting the relevant calculation procedure. The aim of our investigation was to determine the level of sentence repeating and the level of understanding of word exercise in pupils attending 3rd year logopaedic primary school in the Czech Republic. The paper forms a subsection of a specific research project within the Department of Special Education Studies, Faculty of Education, Palacký University, Olomouc, PdF_2012_021 "Communication deficiencies in selected forms of impaired communication skills with focus on assessing the partial determinants of verbal and non-verbal communication components in special education practice." The principal project investigator is doc. Mgr. Kateřina Vitásková, Ph.D.
