    Quality of PhD Studies and Intercultural Competencies in Global Society

    Globalization is changing characteristics of society, people's life and their mentality. In relevance to globalization, higher education is gaining new quality dimensions as well, internationalization including among the most important ones. Awareness inquality of doctoral studies supposes recognition of the need for PhD students' intercultural competencies. The article highlights that the impact of intercultural competencies for PhD quality still remains underestimated. Thus, the challenges of globalization, policy priorities of internationalization in tertiary education are analyzed. The presented idea of intercultural competencies has been justified by the concept of Self - directed Learning and the derived theories of Transformative Learning, Heutagogy and Pandragogy. The concept of intercultural competence has been analyzed in the aspects of the development stages (Fennes, Hapgood, 1997), dimensions (Byram, 1997) and level of formalization (Lauzackas, 2005).
