Intercultural Communicative Competence and the Global Competition Phenomenon
Original language description
Due to the increasingly globalized world and the changing needs of the labour market, the intercultural communicative competence (ICC) has been raising attention in higher education (HE) debates. This paper addresses theoretical and practical questions connected with the changing goals and approaches in HE, focusing primarily on the role of language and intercultural learning and teaching in globalizing economies in which the interconnectedness of people is extensively increasing. Building on the theoretical background of international and intercultural communication, considering English as a lingua franca, taking into account the employers´ requirements, the quality and effectiveness of education, and the desire to better the performance, the discussion assesses the rationale behind the intercultural language competence acquisition in pursuit of purposeful ICC development. It also considers its challenges and opportunities in the field of international project cooperation, and points out shifts in teaching approaches and language curricula in HE.
