The paper addresses theoretical and practical questions connected with the changing goals and approaches in higher education (HE), focusing on the role of language and intercultural learning and teaching in globalizing economies in which the interconnectedness of people of diverging backgrounds is rapidly increasing. Building on the concept of international and intercultural communication and English as a lingua franca, taking into account the human capacity to innovate, and the desire to grow to better the performance and achieve qualitatively higher goals, the discussion assesses the rationale behind the intercultural language competence acquisition, considers its challenges and opportunities in the field of international project cooperation, and demonstrates shifts in language teaching approaches in higher education.
