How to Address Properly: Students' Awareness of English and Czech Conventions
Original language description
One of the communicative language competences teachers of English should help their pupils develop is sociolinguistic competence. As linguistic markers of social relations differ in English and Czech considerably, it is vital that future teachers of English are aware of this dimension of language use. Taking this into consideration, the chapter tries to ascertain future teachers' awareness of the differences in the use of address forms in English and Czech. Based on the results of a quiz given to the students at the Department of English, Faculty of Education, Palacky University, Olomouc, deficiencies in their knowledge are identified and areas for remedial work suggested.
