Attitudes of Students in 2nd Stage of Elementary Schools to Health Promotion in the Context of Health Literacy
Original language description
The paper describes the results of a research study of the attitudes of pupils in 2nd stage of elementary schools to concepts associated with health promotion. Promotion of health and an optimum lifestyle play a significant role in the present society across various age categories of individuals. Although the concept of health literacy is not used as frequently as literacy relating for example to reading, maths, natural sciences, finance or information, its importance is increasing. It is therefore necessary to monitor whether elementary school pupils achieve the competences associated with their health literacy according to the Framework educational programme for elementary education. Besides cognitive and psychomotor objectives it is important to monitor the achieved affective objectives. For the purposes of this diagnosis, we measured the attitudes to health promotion using a simplified semantic differential ATER modified for elementary school pupils. The following health promotion concepts were presented to the pupils: health education, healthy lifestyle, health, illness, physical activity, balanced nutrition, diet, obesity, drugs, alcohol, smoking, personal computer, leisure time, old age, parents and I. The research was conducted at the turn of 2015/2016 and involved 196 pupils from grades 6 to 9 from several randomly selected elementary schools. After optimization of the semantic differential, the research data were used to develop semantic spaces of the concepts. The study also included a statistical comparison of the pupils' attitudes to health promotion in terms of gender, and their development in 2nd stage of elementary school, where the Health education course is taught.
