Analysis of the relationship between empathy and personality among undergraduate students of teaching professions
Original language description
Empathy has been constructed as an anchoring and adjustment process, a temporary state, a stable personality trait, or as a complex multidimensional socio-emotional competency. The five-factor model (Big Five) is currently considered as the dominant paradigm in personality research, as an optimal method explaining individual differences in experience and behaviour. Previous studies confirmed the link between empathy and personality traits, especially agreeableness; some studies also suggest a relationship with conscientiousness, extraversion or openness to experience. The focus of the present paper was how empathy related to personality traits. The data were obtained through the Empathy Quotient (EQ) and Ten Item Personality Measurement (TIPI) on a sample of 313 teachers in pre-graduate training. The research sample was divided into three generations (X, Y, Z). The results of an ANOVA analysis showed a decreasing level of empathy in younger generations (represented by strong effect of d = .68). Pearson correlation analyses suggested a small correlation (r2=.029-.045) between empathy and agreeableness both in the entire sample (r=.213) and in the Z and Y Generations (r=.207 and .204). The decreasing level of empathy and the positive correlation between empathy and agreeableness were consistent with previous studies. The results of correlation analyses were confirmed by regression analyses; no significant inter-generation differences were observed. The results suggest that in all generations the degree of pro-social orientation (empathy, agreeableness) generally decreases, which is a warning sign for future employees in helping professions. Teacher training curricula should include programmes and activities aimed at the development of pro-social skills and promotion of internal orientation to others and interest in others.
