Situation of Parents of Children with Disease during the Diagnosis Communication as a Factor Affecting Communication in Special Education

  • Original language description

Experience from practice with the diagnosis and subsequent therapy of seriously ill children shows that one of the key aspects of successful treatment is an informed, cooperating and supportive person (most often the child's parent). After the announcement of an unfavorable and serious health diagnosis of a child, each member of the family copes with the new situation differently, individually. Even so, usual and to some extent legitimate processes can be observed in this difficult period. Parents of children with disabilities have a non-transferable experience and everyone can react in a specific way. Post-traumatic stress disorder can occur in anyone as a result of a traumatic event. The onset of depression is part of the life of the vast majority of parents of children with disabilities to whom their child's diagnosis is communicated. The content of the research was to determine and describe the degree of depression and the development of a post-traumatic stress response immediately after communicating a serious diagnosis of a child to his parents. The questionnaire involved 60 legal representatives who cooperated with the Guidance Center. The experience of parents significantly affects communication skills, cooperation with employees of school counseling facilities and other services. The presented facts are important for the staff of subsequent services, including special pedagogues in school counseling workplaces.
