Social participation of children and adolescents with progressive neuromuscular disease in leisure and school: Theoretical background

  • Original language description

The study explores the social participation of children and adolescents with severe progressive neuromuscular diseases (NMD), such as spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) and Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). The aim of the paper is to analyze factors influencing social engagement in this population, identify barriers to their full participation in society, and propose measures to improve their psychosocial functioning. Research findings indicate that support from family, teachers, and peers significantly contributes to increased self-esteem, independence, and overall quality of life. Key barriers to social participation include environmental obstacles, individual differences in disease progression, a lack of understanding of NMD specifics by peers and society, fatigue, low self-esteem, and limited opportunities for leisure activities. The study concludes with recommendations for school practices aimed at fostering social participation, enhancing self-confidence, and promoting the autonomy of children with NMD, enabling them to function effectively in daily life and actively engage in social activities.
