ViPER project: to draw European knowledge together to support children's play

  • Original language description

Less opportunity to play and physical inactivity are hypothesized to be a contributing factor in the development of a variety of diseases. Play is vital for children’s development and fundamental for a child. Experts on child's play from the United Kingdom created a project “Volunteers in playwork”, to return a child’s play to its roots. The emphasis is to promote freely chosen play, to promote natural need to be physically active, promote creativity, self-sufficiency, and responsibility of children at play. The educator has the role as the creator of a motivating play environment and provider of resources for the freely chosen play. After successful validation, the project has expanded to several European countries, including the Czech Republic. The paper introduces the basic structure and perspectives of training course. One of the chosen groups of participants was primary education teachers and educators working in school afternoon clubs or students of primary education. The primary education teachers strongly agreed that gathered knowledge about “playwork” and use of freely chosen play allowed them to use other tools to develop physical literacy in physical education lessons and during other activities with children.
