Does Alvarez truly need only the brave and the strong? Jaroslav Foglar and experiential education for boys in Bohemia
Original language description
The paper utilises the method of hermeneutic interpretation to examine the sense and meaning of Jaroslav Foglar’s first and most famous long-term stage game and its motto ‘Alvarez needs only the brave and the strong!’. The historical impact (nearly 80 years since the game was introduced) and the motivational, programmatic and ethical elements of the texts and educational instructions by Jaroslav Foglar can be contrasted with contemporary society’s focus on security and safety. Pedagogic concepts that embrace a certain degree of risk and danger (outdoor education, experiential pedagogy) and their theoretical models (comfort zone) stem from the pedagogic concepts of Jaroslav Foglar’s literary and educational work.
