Design of Plywood Strengthened with Basalt Fiber Reinforced Polymer

  • Original language description

Fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) have excellent mechanical properties. It is caused by synergy effect. Not polymeric resin nor fibers can be separately used as an engineering material [1]. Basalt fibers are made of volcanic rocks. They are durable against chemicals and corrosion, do not posess any risk for human healt and have good thermal properties. They have better mechanical properties than glass ones and almost as high as carbon fibers [2]. The best polymer for FRP is epoxy resin; matrix which is durable against corrosion and has hydrophobic properties. Epoxy resin has high solid content, therefore do not shrink during solidification and can be used as a surface layer of reinforced material [3]. Wooden element bonded with FRP will withstand bigger load [4]. Beams are usually reinforced at tensional or both tensional and compressional side. FRP reinforced beams has improved mechanical properties. The more is FRP placed at the outer side of material the bigger load will this composite withstand [5]. Sliseris [6] strengthened outer layers of plywood with epoxy resin and glass fibers. Reinforcement improved mechanical properties and made them more uniform between perpendicular and crosswise direction.
