Virus elimination in peach using chemotherapy

  • Original language description

Chemotherapy is one of the methods used for the elimination of viruses in plants, based on the use of chemicals with antiviral effect. The most commonly used antiviral is ribavirin. In this study the effect of acyclovir and rimantadine on peach viruses was examined. The virus diseases PDV and PNRSV were detected in the peach cultivar 'Suncrest' and PPV in the peach cultivar 'Redhaven'. A nodal culture was established (following surface disinfection with mercuric chloride) and the young shoots were multiplied. The antivirals in the total amounts of 25 or 50 mg L-1 were applied into the MS medium using a sterile filter, just after autoclavage. Shoots were cultivated on this type of medium for three weeks and transferred on Quoirin and Lepoivre medium containing plant growth regulators and without antivirals. After two months of cultivation, the shoots were tested using the reverse transcription PCR and the products were separated electrophoretically on 1.5% agarose gel. The study showed that the usage of acyclovir is more effective than rimantadine.
