Malepszy and Solarek were the first who report somatic embryogenesis from cucumber cell suspension in 1986. The main Iimitation of cucumber embryogenesis is a high occurrence of abnormal embryos combined with a Iow ability and Branchard, 1993). For thiswork, we report on the induction of somatic embryos in cucumber hypocotyl suspension. The endogenous ABA Ievel in the cells are also discussed. One-week-old plants, derived from the surface sterilized seeds of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L., cv. Nora) grown on a solidified medium (MS, sucrose 5 9 r'), were used. Embryogenic cell suspension cultures from hypocotyl segments of cucumber have been initiated by 7-day exposure to MS medium supplemented with 3% sucrose, 2.2 mg r' 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid,and 100 mg r' casein hydrolyzate. The suspension cultures were maintained in the same liquid medium with 1.1 mg r1 2,4-D only on a horizontal shaker at 28°C, and 16/8 h photoperiod.
