Novel roles of caspase-7 in cell differentiation during development of bones.

  • Original language description

Caspases were primarily identified as the crucial molecules of the apoptotic machinery. Caspase-7 belongs to the group of executioner caspases (-3, -6, -7) ensuring the final phase of apoptosis. However, beyond minor group of apoptotic cells, activationof caspase-7 was detected also in large population of bone cells that did not show signs of apoptosis. Based on this observation, activation of caspase-7 was examined from early to postnatal stages of bone development to study its role during osteogenesis. Since the mechanisms of ossification in the intramembranous and endochondral bones may differ, our attention was paid to both models. Activation of caspase-7 was detected already in initial stages of bone formation and persisted to postnatal development in both systems. However, the effect of caspase-7 deficiency was manifested in dependence on type of ossification.
