Original language description
Atypical myopathy (AM) is a highly fatal muscle disease of grazing horses accompanied by acute myonecrosis. The cause is ingestion of Acer pseudoplatanus seeds containing non proteinogenic amino acid hypoglycin A that inhibits some acyl-CoA dehydrogenases. As a consequence the concentrations of free carnitine and short, medium and long acylcarnitines are increased in the serum of affected horses. The aim of the study was to confirm the diagnosis of AM in pastured horses with myopathy that were consultedat The Equine Clinic, University Vet. Pharm. Sciences in Brno since October 2013. Altogether 20 cases of myopathy in pastured horses were examined. The diagnosis of myopathy was established on the basis of clinical signs and elevated CK activity (80.0 -19 031.0 ?kat/l). Serum samples of 10 of the horses were collected and analysed using mass spectrometry. The results of all horses were compared with 12 healthy control horses.
