Phytochemical analysis of Amorpha fruticosa L. Fabaceae and its biological activity
Original language description
Amorpha fruticosa L., Fabaceae is a shrub native to North America and has been introduced to Europe as an ornamental shrub. It is registered amongst the most noxious invasive species in Europe.[1] In the folk medicine of the Indians it was used as an anthelmintic, antirheumatic and analgesic in the stomach pain. In Asia, methanolic extract was used for the treatment of hypertension, hematoma and bruising. Previous studies of this plant reported a number of phenolic compounds including stilbenes, flavonoids and particulary prenylated derivatives [2]. Some of the compounds showed anti-inflammatory [3], antidiabetic, antimicrobial activity [5].In our study, extracts prepared from different parts of A. fruticosa, L. primarily leaves and flowers extracts, inhibited TNF-? production in lipopolysacharide stimulated cells by ELISA. The activity was comparable to the standard prednisone. Methanolic extracts of leaves and flowers were analysed by HPLC-DAD-MS and separated by column chromatography and the semi-preparative HPLC. Isolated compounds were identified by NMR. Phytochemical analysis of extracts of A. fruticosa led to identification of several compounds, which could contribute to anti-inflammatory potential of plant.
