Original language description
The social status of teachers is one of the indicators reflecting the significance attached to education in each culture. The aim of this research is to explore how trainee teachers perceive social status and prestige of the teaching profession. Data was collected through the method focus group - semi-structured interview. The research sample consisted of 48 students of teaching faculty, average age 24 years (4 groups of 12). In addition to focusing on the perceived social status of teachers, the advantages and disadvantages of the teaching profession and the reasons affecting its prestige in the eyes of the public were examined. Data were analyzed using grounded theory. The results are consistent with previous studies. The students were not satisfied with the conditions and social status of the teaching profession, and also with the prestige of teaching faculties. The results are discussed.
