Social media as a current socio-technological issue influencing both private and professional lives are discussed in this article. History, description and mission of key social networks are provided as a technical background to this global phenomenon ofWeb 2.0 that has brought new ways of communication and cooperation together with acquisition, sharing and publishing content in the virtual space. The article stems from literature review enriched in statistical studies rating selected networks from global and local perspective. The objective of the paper is to present findings dealing with awareness and actual utilization of social software applications in the process of education, the research was conducted at the Faculty of Informatics and Management, University of Hradec Kralove last year. The sub-goal of this contribution is to show current social media landscape going from the general world scale to the national scale.
