Expression of attractin and its differential enzyme activity in glioma cells.
Original language description
Attractin/mahogany is a multifunctional protein involved in a number of physiological and pathological functions. Human attractin has an enzyme activity resembling dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-IV). In the nervous system, the protein has been detected inneurons but not in glial cells up to now. In this study we provide evidence on expression of both attractin mRNA and protein in 3 glioma cell lines (WHO Grade I rat C6 cells, WHO Grade III and IV human U373 and U87 cells). The protein possesed the DPP-IV-like activity in only human U373 and particularly U87 cells. It was bound almost exclusively plasma membrane and represented 5 and 25 of the total cellular DPP-IV-like enzyme activity pool in both these lines. The functional role of attractin, as well as its enzymatic activity, in glioma cells remains unclear. The data suggests its participation in growth properties of tumors of glial origin.
