Assessment of the relative biological effectiveness of LVR-15 nuclear reactor neutron beam by a simple animal model.

  • Original language description

The 1-week-old rats were subjected to a whole body irradiation either by epithermal neutron beam of the LVR-15 nuclear reactor (Řež near Prague, the flux density 8.8 x 108 n/cm2s-1, reactor power 9 MW, the calculated physical dose 16.1 cGy/min, irradiation time 2.5, 5 or 7 min) or a Cs137 gamma ray source (Cesioterax, Chirana, Prague, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 or 2.0 Gy, 0.402 Gy per min). 8h after irradiation, the radiation damage was manifested by apoptotic condensation of chromatin and shrinkage of cells followed by formation of the apoptotic bodies. Their incidence was proportional to the degree of maturation of the brain and the radiation dose. The radiation damage was most pronounced in the external granular layer (EGL) of the cerebellum and the subependymallayer of the forebrain. The Relative Biological Effectiveness (RBE) of the whole reactor beam spectrum, as determined by the comparison of the number of lethally damaged cells induced by both the reactor and Cs137 sources of radiation, w
