Photonic bandgap structures in planar waveguides.
Original language description
If a 1D or 2D photonic bandgap structure (PBG) is incorporated into a planar optical wavegiude, the refractive-index nonuniformity in the direction perpendicular to the waveguide plane responsible for waveguiding may detrimentally affect its behaviour. Such an influence is demonstrated by numerical numerical modelling of deeply etched waveguide Bragg grating. A simple condition for the design of waveguide PBG structures free of this degradation is formulated and its validity is verified by numerical modelling.
