Sputtering of Ag atoms into metastable excited states.
Original language description
We have investigated neutral silver atoms which are ejected by sputtering from a polycrystalline silver surface under bombardment with keV rare gas ions. Resonant multiphoton ionization in combination with time-of-flight mass spectrometry was used in order to allow a state selective detection of the sputtered species. As a result, excited atoms in both states of the metastable 4d 9 5s 2 ( 2 D 2 ) multiplet have been detected besides ground state atoms and ions. With excitation energies of 3.75 eV ( 2 D5/2 ) and 4.30 eV ( 2 D 3/2 ) these states represent the highest lying metastable excited states which have been detected in sputtering.
