Two groups of 6 calves each were fed a milk replacer and a starter concentrate for 125 days. Control diet contained 0.13 mg selenium (Se) per kg, experimental diet 0.50 mg Se/kg. Weight gain, feed intake and chemical composition of meat were not affectedby Se supplementation. Feeding Se resulted in two-fold higher concentration of Se in meat, hair and faeces. Oxidative stability of meat, expressed as production of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances was non-significantly improved in the Se-supplemented calves. It can be concluded that the enrichment of meat with Se is the main benefit of Se-supplementation in veal calves.

Obsah selenu a antioxidační status tkání telat v období mléčné výživy, krmených dietou s přídavkem selenových kvasinek

Czech description

Dvě skupiny po 6ti telatech byly krmeny mléčnou náhražkou a koncentrátem 125 dní. Kontrolní dieta obsahovala 0,13 mg selenu (Se)/kg, pokusná 0,50 mg Se/kg. Dotace Se neměla vliv na růst, příjem krmiva a chemické složení masa. Zvýšila se však dvojnásobněkoncentrace Se v mase, srsti a výkalech. Oxidační stabilita masa vyjádřená thiobarbiturovým číslem se rovněž zvýšila, avšak jen nesignifikantně. Hlavním přínosem dotace krmné dávky telat selenem je tudíž zvýšení obsahu tohoto esenciálního prvku v mase.
