Jakobson and Peirce: Deep Misunderstanding, or Creative Innovation?
Original language description
The chapter attempts to interpret Roman Jakobson’s view on selected aspects of the semiotic theory of C.S. Peirce. In its first part, the chapter focuses on the relationship between the sign models of the two giants of semiotics, in its second part, on Jakobson’s interpretation of Peirce’s second trichotomy and an attempt to implement the concept of interpretant. Although Jakobson’s interpretation of Peirce can in many respects be regarded as inspiring, on closer inspection it shows an unsurprising amount of mutual incommensurability, stemming from the diversity of the differing conceptual frameworks and historical influences involved.
