Perfume Production in the Ancient World /2./

  • Original language description

This second meeting of our working group on the history of ancient perfumery continues to explore the production of scented materials from multiple perspectives-historical, archaeological, natural scientific, artisanal, cultural, and religious. We aim to challenge traditional, monolithic notions of ancient perfumery cultures such as “Egyptian,” “Mesopotamian,” or “Roman” by examining how ingredients and methods of scent production traveled across cultures and varied within the same culture over time and place. By engaging scholars, perfumers, artists, and practitioners in contemporary perfumery and olfactory arts, we foster a multidisciplinary dialogue that bridges historical inquiry with practical expertise. Organized by Sean Coughlin, Heike Wilde, and Laurence Totelin as part of the Alchemies of Scent project (GA ČR Junior Star GM21-30494M) and coordinated by the Department for the Study of Ancient and Medieval Thought of the Institute of Philosophy of the Czech Academy of Sciences, this conference will involve practical exegesis and demonstrations. The insights gathered will contribute to a forthcoming volume provisionally titled Perfume Production in the Ancient World, aiming to deepen our understanding of ancient scented workshops, landscapes, and the complex interplay of cultural influences in perfumery practices.
