Exploration of the electrophoretic behaviour of borane cluster anions and of the capability of capillary electrophoresis to separate them chirally.
Original language description
Electrophoretic behaviour of anionic boron cluster compounds differs from that of organic anions. One of reasons for it is high hydrophobicity of the compounds even if they are charged. Polar organic solvent like acetonitrile or methanol added to a buffered background electrolyte secures solubility of boron compounds. The solvent acts also as a competing agent, which weakens too strong interactions of the compounds with the hydrophobic cavity of beta-cyclodextrin used as a chiral selector. Chiral discrimination was obtrained for all investigated anions, which belonged to four different structural types of anionic boron cluster compounds. This demonstrates that capillary electrophoresis is promising technique for the development of methods for routine analytical chiral separations of anionic boron cluster compounds.
